Learn to be Present

Would you like to have peace of mind and a feeling of bliss every day, no matter how chaotic or stressful your day may be?

The answer is simple: learn to be present.

You see, there are only three time frames: the past, the present and the future. Once you start becoming aware of your thoughts and the things you think about, you will notice that most of the time your thoughts and feelings are focused on the past or future. You will also notice that these thoughts are clouded with judgements that revolve around all the things that they may have happened in the past or the worries that may await you ahead in your future.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Most of us go throughout our lives in such a way; always living in the past or the future. We have become so accustomed to thinking in such a way that it has become a habit, which we mistake as second nature. Sometimes, you may even think and feel that your own mind is out of your control!

What Does it Mean to Be Present?

Being present is a frame of time you choose to focus on. It means you are choosing to focus on the here, and the now. It means abandoning the thoughts of the past, and future – which do not exist. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to have goals for the future. But you can’t accomplish the goals if you don’t do what you need to do today, and what you need to do now.

Practice Being Present

Just as I said earlier, the way you think becomes a habit. You can change the way you think by changing your habit. Make your habit to living in the present instead of the past or future.  It may seem strange at first but the more your practice, and the more you do it, the more naturally it will come to you.

So what can you do now to become present?

Whatever you are doing right now; reading this blog post, doing the laundry, anything! – learn to focus on doing only that one thing. Pay attention and observe what you are doing, your body, your thoughts, the feelings and sensations you feel.

You may notice your thoughts drifting, and that’s okay. Becoming aware of your thoughts is the first step of bringing them back to your present task at hand. Do this again, and do it often. You will find yourself living more and more into the present moment!
